Why China abolished agricultural taxes in 2005
China's agricultural tax was first formed in 594 BC and ended on December 29, 2005.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, for a long time, they also relied on peasants to pay grain to maintain industry and military, and the burden on peasants was very heavy.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, there were many conflicts because of the imposition of agricultural taxes.
In August 1999, a farmer in Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province, was overwhelmed by the burden imposed by the local government and began to encourage farmers to resist illegal fees. However, he was taken away by the township government and sent to a "study class", where he eventually died an unnatural death. This incident angered the peasants, and tens of thousands of peasants in the vicinity of Fengcheng spontaneously took action to surround and destroy the township government building. Angry peasants dug a pit in the courtyard of the township government and buried the mayor alive on the spot, and the town sheriff and a policeman were also killed.
In 2004, the No. 1 document of the Central Committee officially announced new rural policies, including the gradual abolition of agricultural taxes, the abolition of taxes on agricultural and forestry products other than tobacco, and the provision of subsidies for farmers. Finally, in the 2006 government work report of the National People's Congress and the National People's Congress, it was clear that the agricultural tax would be completely exempted from January 1, marking the official withdrawal of the agricultural tax that has lasted for thousands of years in China's history.
At present, China's arable land is no longer taxable, and farmers have a small amount of subsidies.
The Chinese are very patient, but if they can't bear it, they will also resist very quickly and bloodily, starting from the Qin Dynasty, in more than ten dynasties in China's history, the vast majority of them changed dynasties through peasant resistance.
